The Territorial Efficient Service Medal was established in 1908 alongside the creation of the Territorial Force, a volunteer reserve formed as part of military reforms led by Richard Haldane. Designed to reward dedication and reliability, the medal recognized long and efficient service in Britain’s part-time army.
Awarded to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men, the Territorial Efficient Service Medal required 12 years of continuous and efficient service, with allowances for wartime service counting toward qualification. Recipients had to demonstrate good conduct and commitment to regular training. The medal itself was struck in silver, bearing the image of the reigning monarch, while its green and yellow ribbon symbolized readiness and service.
The importance of the medal grew during World War I and World War II, when members of the Territorial Force were mobilized for active duty across the globe. Their contributions reinforced the value of reserve forces within the British Army. In 1930, the medal was replaced by the Efficiency Medal, which standardized long-service awards across auxiliary forces. Today, the Territorial Efficient Service Medal remains an important symbol of dedication in British military history.
