The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), formerly the 3rd Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army until 1961. It had a history dating back to 1572 and was one of the oldest regiments in the British Army being third in order of precedence (ranked as the 3rd Regiment of the line). It provided distinguished service over a period of almost four hundred years accumulating one hundred and sixteen battle honours. On the outbreak of World War One (1914-18), 1st Battalion was in Britain and deployed straight to the Western Front. It stayed there throughout the conflict. 2nd Battalion was in India and joined 1st Battalion for 10 months in January 1915, before moving to Salonika for the rest of the war. 2nd Battalion shifted to occupation duties in Iraq from 1920 to 1922, but otherwise spent much of the interwar period in Britain and Palestine. 1st Battalion spent the initial post-war years in Germany, Ireland, Turkey and Egypt, but then moved to India and Burma for 11 years in 1927.

1st Battalion was in Egypt on the outbreak of World War Two (1939-45) and spent the whole war fighting in the Middle East and Italy. 2nd Battalion fought in the battle of France, the invasions of Iran and Iraq, and the Burma campaign. 1st Battalion’s immediate post-war duty was peacekeeping in Greece, before being disbanded in August 1947. 2nd Battalion was moved from India to Malaya in November 1945, operating there and in Hong Kong until being renumbered as 1st Battalion in 1949. The regiment then went on to serve on three of Britain’s post-colonial deployments – Sudan in 1950, Egypt in 1951 and Kenya in 1953. Its final posting was in 1955 to join the British Army of the Rhine in West Germany, from where it moved to Aden in 1958. In November 1960 it returned to Britain and in March the following year the regiment was amalgamated for the first time in 389 years, joining The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment to form The Queen’s Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment.
