WW2 Burma Royal Marines Commandos Jungle Knife, Slouch Hat, Shoes, Medals, Escape Compass, Kit Bag – UK ONLY

DUE TO THE WEIGHT ETC., THIS IS FOR SALE TO THE UK ONLY.
John Lancelot Burd was a Royal Marine who fought in the jungles of Burma during the Burma Campaign of WW2. A few years ago we were lucky enough to buy Burd’s artefacts and
souvenirs direct from his family and which are now listed for sale here. Included is:
His Jungle Fighting Knife made from a Captured Japanese Bayonet
Included is his hand-crafted fighting knife, which he made from a captured (looted) Japanese bayonet which he has cut down and added some grip tape to the handle. The Japanese bayonet were very long and not very practical for closed in spaces like the jungles of Burma. Though this is effectively a broken Japanese bayonet, it was carried and used by a British Royal Marine during the fighting in the jungles and reflects the fact that for Britain, the troops fighting out in Burma were very much the “forgotten army” and often had to scratch build weapons and equipment due to the lack of resupply. This knife clearly meant a lot to Burd as he chose to keep it and bring it back from Asia as a souvenir of his war.
His Slouch Hat
This is his original military issue slouch hat that he wore in the jungles of Burma during the WW2 campaign. It is obviously in very worn condition. There are also several holes that were made by jungle insects that seemed to like eating the felt (these are NOT post war moth holes). The puggaree is in good condition though.
His escape & evasion compass
His original military issue small escape and evasion compass that he used is also included. Burd cleverly mounted it in a water proof wrapping and wore it with his dog tags around his neck throughout his time in combat. Unfortunately, the dog tags weren’t kept, but he did keep this lovely compass. No doubt invaluable when trying to orientate in thick jungle.
His medals
These are his original medals, mounted for wear including the Burma Star.
His military boots
Burd saved quite a lot of stuff from his military career, including the sturdy British Army boots he wore in India and Burma, the laces are long gone and they are a bit tatty, but nonetheless a nice surviving piece of WW2 Royal Marines military uniform!
Kit bag
Also here is his military issue British Army kit bag with his name J.L. BURD and service number CH.X 2988 stencilled onto the front
Memoirs
Perhaps the best thing about this lot is the provenance, and best of all Burd wrote up his wartime experiences in a 16 page long memoir. A copy of which his family kindly included. It tells of his experiences throughout the whole war (Britain, Africa, India, Burma) etc.
Photos
His family very kindly allowed us to have copies of some his war photos (understandably they wished to keep the original photos). Included is a wonderful action shot of Burd taken during the battle of Hill 170 in January 1945 in Kangow, Burma. Burd, as part of the 3rd Commando Brigade won a victory against the Japanese 54th Division. The photo shows Burd and other Royal Marines clearing out the Japanese from foxholes.
Pack of playing card, menus etc.
Finally, there are some war time playing cards, menu etc. that aren’t photographed, but are included.
Overall, this is an amazing lot of artefacts, with excellent provenance to a Royal Marine who served with the 3rd Commando brigade. Not often do you get a great collection like this.
